BIOROCK wastewater treatment system installed for the rehabilitation of a mountain refuge in Spain

The structure and environmental context:

The installation of the BIOROCK wastewater treatment system is part of the rehabilitation project of an old mountain refuge. The shelter has a capacity of approximately 30 people and is located in the Vall d'Aguja, a protected area of Alta Garrotxa (Gerona-Spain).

The challenge:

The management of wastewater generated by the activity in the refuge presented several challenges:

The final effluent resulting from the treatment had to be of high quality since it was going to be discharged directly into the Sant Aniol stream bed.
The purification system had to be capable of withstanding significant fluctuations in visitors throughout the year. From winters where the activity is normally very little or null, to summer periods where the occupation reaches its maximum for many days.
The site lacked an electricity supply.

The solution:

The BIOROCK system was the chosen solution because it offers an effective response to each of these challenges. BIOROCK works WITHOUT electricity, it is resistant to flow fluctuations
and it can withstand periods of inactivity without problems.

The results:

The water resulting from purification can be discharged directly into the ground or into a river, without risk to the environment. The quality standards of the treated water obtained with BIOROCK exceed the minimum required by current legislation.
